Program Notes

Ares Selvagens (2016) is a compelling, short work for woodwind octet (two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, and two bassoons). Utilizing a predominantly modal language and minimalist motivic development, the piece evokes primitive dances, rituals, and chants from the composer’s imagination. Structurally, the work unfolds across three main sections that cycle through raw, satirical, and mystical atmospheres. It opens with a rhythmically driven, dissonant dance that eventually dissolves into a dreamlike, mysterious clarinet aria. Following a brief recapitulation of the opening material, the piece culminates in a grand, soaring metamorphosis of that central aria.

Ideal for chamber music recitals, university and conservatory ensembles.
